Week 1: Introduction & Skill Assessment

  2. Understanding the importance of a strong portfolio in design careers.

  3. Overview of different types of portfolios (academic, job application, competition submissions).

  4. Individual goals setting: each participant outlines personal goals for the course.

 

Day 2: Self-Assessment & Skill Evaluation

 

  1. Review of each participant's existing work (if available) and self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses.

  2. Evaluating the current presentation quality, layout, and content.

  3. Identifying areas for improvement in design work and presentation skills.

 

Day 3: Design Principles & Storytelling

  1. Fundamentals of design principles: composition, color, typography, and hierarchy.

  2. Importance of storytelling in presenting design projects.

  3. Case studies of exemplary portfolios to analyze structure and presentation styles.

Week 2: Project Curation & Organization

 

​Day 1: Project Selection & Curation

  1. Deciding which projects to include based on career goals and audience.

  2. Techniques for showcasing a diverse skill set while maintaining a cohesive portfolio narrative.

  3. Prioritising projects that best demonstrate skills, creativity, and problem-solving.

 

Day 2: Structuring the Portfolio

  1. Review of each participant's existing work (if available) and self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses.

  2. Evaluating the current presentation quality, layout, and content.

  3. Identifying areas for improvement in design work and presentation skills.

Day 3: Layout & Presentation Techniques

  1. Techniques for creating a consistent and aesthetically pleasing layout.

  2. Choosing effective typography and color schemes to enhance readability.

  3. Strategies for organizing content to improve flow and clarity.

Week 3: Enhancing Projects & Refining Content

 

​Day 1: Project Selection & Curation

  1. Deciding which projects to include based on career goals and audience.

  2. Techniques for showcasing a diverse skill set while maintaining a cohesive portfolio narrative.

  3. Prioritising projects that best demonstrate skills, creativity, and problem-solving.

 

Day 2: Improving Presentation Techniques

  1. Refining project presentation methods, such as creating physical models or handmade visual aids.

  2. Using storytelling techniques to articulate design decisions and outcomes.

  3. Creating diagrams or illustrations to support project explanations without digital tools.

Day 3: Feedback Sessions & Iteration

  1. Peer review and critique sessions for project presentations.

  2. Individual mentoring to address specific areas for improvement.

  3. Incorporating feedback into project revisions.

Week 4: Finalizing & Presenting the Portfolio

 

​Day 1: Portfolio Assembly & Polishing

  1. Assembling the curated and refined projects into the final portfolio format.

  2. Checking for consistency in layout, color, and typography.

  3. Proofreading all written content for grammar, clarity, and impact.

 

Day 2: Mock Interviews & Presentation Skills

  1. Practicing portfolio presentations for various contexts (academic, job interviews).

  2. Mock interview sessions to simulate real-world scenarios.

  3. Tips on verbal communication, body language, and storytelling techniques.

Day 3: Final Review & Submission Preparation

  1. Final review of completed portfolios by instructor.

  2. Addressing any last-minute changes or polishing.

  3. Guidance on portfolio submission for different purposes (e.g., online sharing or physical printing).

Week 5: Follow-Up

  1. Post-Course Feedback & Q&A

  2. Participants can share their experiences with recent interviews or submissions.

  3. Additional feedback and suggestions for continuous improvement.

  4. Open Q&A for any lingering questions on portfolio development.

Individual & Group Sessions are available

This is in addition to the course mentioned above.

 

To further elevate the quality of your portfolio, optional sessions on software skills will be included, covering Photoshop for image editing, 2D renderings and creating mockups, SketchUp for basic 3D modeling, Sections and Isometrics and spatial design, and Illustrator for vector illustrations and diagrams. These tools can significantly enhance the visual quality and presentation of your projects, making your portfolio more compelling and polished for academic or professional submissions.
